Finding a job in this day and age is very different than 10 or even 5 years ago. In fact, people are no longer looking for a job. They are implementing a career campaign or building a personal brand for their career-seeking strategy. With that said, today's career seeker must take a new approach. Below are the 6 key tips in developing a stronger career campaign:
Develop a personal brand: make sure your image, expertise, and knowledge come through consistently across all social media platforms, within your resume, and any career documents that you use. This includes the format of documents or files, tone of your professional message, and what you want to be known for in your industry.
Create an online resume and portfolio: it is important to have both a traditional and an online resume that you can forward to prospective employers. Include a portfolio of projects, writing samples, and other examples of your work with your online resume. Many job sites like Monster, Linkedin and CareerBuilder allow you to upload your portfolio or link to external web pages for your projects, so take advantage of this feature.
Customize your traditional resume and cover letter: your resume should be tailored to the position for which you are applying, and your cover letter should reflect your overall qualifications and how you will/can make immediate contributions in the role. Your resume should also express results-oriented achievements that you can quantify as well as qualify.
Develop a professional social network: join Linkedin and professional organizations within your field. Develop a professional relationship with key influencers and other experts in your field as they can be a wealth of information and serve as a resource. Likewise, you can share your knowledge with other professionals to establish yourself as a thought leader.
Establish yourself as a subject matter expert and thought leader: Writing a blog, publishing articles and reviews in industry publications, or on social media, or answering questions in forums related to your industry shows prospective employers that you know the industry and are up to date with trends and knowledge.
Make sure prospective employers have access to your online credentials: have links to your online resume and portfolio, and professional social media pages. Include these links in your emails, on your social media About section, and on related career campaigning documents for additional exposure to prospective employers.
