About the event
The recent protests and demonstrations concerning police brutality and excessive force towards people of color has triggered a unique and long-overdue consciousness in our society. Many diverse groups are expressing their deep fears and frustrations about discrimination, bigotry and/or microaggression. These feelings and experiences impact many areas of our lives, both personal and professional. Coaches need to be prepared to handle the emotions and feelings that may come up during a coaching session for their coachees, particularly those who identify with a marginalized group. Unfortunately, many coaches are not equipped to work through these areas as coaching is not therapy. But some of the cultural issues coachees may bring to the coaching session could touch areas that require therapeutic approaches.
This is an opportunity to learn how coaches can become allies. We can also implement cultural sensitivity in the context of coaching as part of our practice to help our clients navigate and use their cultural experiences in a way to helps them move forward. In this information session, Dr. Dawn C. Reid aka Coach Dawn, will talk about cultural sensitivity and what it means for the coaching industry. She will also go over how coaches can ask questions and use coachable moments that embrace or challenge a coachee's perception without being insensitive or dismissive of the coachee's cultural landscape. Dr. Reid will discuss the APA's guidelines on cultural sensitivity and how coaches can incorporate these principles to manage the coaching process.
The purpose of this information session is to introduce coaches to Cultural Sensitivity Coaching and help coaching professionals obtain a deeper understanding level on how cultural experiences and social identity impacts a coachee's (or employee's) productivity, accountability, and goal attainment. The mission of this information session is to improve our awareness around the role of cultural sensitivity in coaching. By becoming more aware about the influence of cultural experiences, we can begin viewing cultural sensitivity as a core coaching skill to create successful outcomes for our coachee's who have perceived microaggression, discrimination, bigotry or other racially-charged situations as a barrier to their choices or goals.
Participants are asked to be ready to experiment and come with an open mind. We also encourage you to bring your examples or personal experiences if you have them. This session will also offer you the opportunity to learn more about Reid Ready Life Coaching's cultural sensitivity training course as a resource to help you develop this coaching skill. We will begin incorporating this cultural sensitivity in our 16-Week and 4-Week coach training courses, as well as in an independent masterclass starting in July.
